Bernard Shaw and the Incomparable Max

In 1898 George Bernard Shaw retired from his post as theatre critic at the Saturday Review. Max Beerbohm took over and was greeted by Shaw as ‘the Incomparable Max’ – a nickname that stuck. In the 1890s Beerbohm had built a reputation as a caricaturist and essayist. Bernard Shaw was already establishing himself as Britain’s leading playwright. Together they left an unforgettable portrait of the era that followed Victoria, that of King Edward VII.

Oct. 8: Theatre and its Personalities
