A close look at some of the masterpieces produced in France in the 19th century

From One Revolution to Another

A look a three masterpieces from the 1840s:

  • Liszt at the piano by Josef Danhauser (1840) – Victor Hugo, George Sand, Alexandre Dumas, Niccolo Paganini, all the famous figures of the French Romantic period pictured listening in awe to Franz Liszt’s music
  • the Taking of the Smalah of Abel-Khader by Horace Vernet (1843), illustrating a key episode of the conquest of Algeria by the French
  • Lamartine rejecting the red flag in front of the city hall of Paris (1848) by Félix Philippoteaux, or the moment when the French 2nd Republic was born with the choice of the tricolour flag.
