The Glittering French Second Empire

Born out of a coup d’État and heir to the controversial reign of Napoleon, the Second Empire sought from the start to acquire legitimacy and respectability amongst European royal courts. The new emperor, Napoleon III, called on the famous painter Franz Winterhalter to change the image of the new regime.

A look at several pieces: Napoleon III, emperor of the French and Eugénie, empress of the French (1853), the French imperial couple’s official portraits presented to the public during the 1855 Paris World Exhibition; The Empress Eugénie Surrounded by her Ladies-in-Waiting (1855), celebrating the glittering court life planned with maestria by a beautiful sovereign; Reception of the Ambassadors from Siam at the Château de Fontainebleau (1864), illustrating one of Napoleon III’s key objectives in the field of foreign affairs, that is to reestablish France amongst the leading European powers. Siam, an independent state threatened by the British colonial expansion, sought the help of France and sent ambassadors who were received with great pomp at the château of Fontainebleau in 1861.
