1861-1964, or how to transcend the Civil War and its consequences
In 1861, with the outbreak of the Civil War, the U.S. political compromise collapsed. The defeat of the South and the abolition of slavery granted the former slaves the right to vote.
Quickly, however, the South managed to limit that right, which will only be fully restored in 1965, following a century of civil rights activism.
In 1945, the U.S. emerged from the Second World War as the greatest and most powerful democracy in the world. But the Cold War brought back populism and political witch hunts.
In the series:
Nov. 21: 1776-1860, the Founding of a young State
Nov. 28: 1861-1964, or how to transcend the Civil War and its consequences
Dec. 5: 1965-2024, new stakes, new threats – including social media and how Trump got elected
