Theatre and its Personalities
Max Beerbohm’s eldest brother, Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree, was one of best-known actors of his day. This gave Max an entrée into theatrical circles, which he used to produce caricature portraits of actors, directors and playwrights, including Ellen Terry, Arthur Wing Pinero, Mrs. Patrick Campbell and Shaw himself. Shaw’s plays continued to dominate the West End stage. During Edward VII’s reign, he produced Man and Superman, John Bull’s Other Island (which made the king laugh so hard he broke his chair), Major Barbara and The Doctor’s Dilemma.
