With Gail Leondar-Wright, a passionate Sondheim fan.

Gypsy and Funny Girl

In an attempt to chip away at what makes Sondheim’s work great, we’ll contrast songs from two musicals from the final years of the Golden Age of Broadway: Gypsy (1959) for which Sondheim contributed the lyrics, and Funny Girl (1964) for which he did not.

In the series:
Mar. 20: West Side Story
Mar. 27: Gypsy and Funny Girl

Suggested preparation:

Gypsy: Chichester Festival’s revival, at London’s Savoy Theatre in 2015) This has commercials, but is excellent. A very strong and unusual interpretation of the character of Rose: https://tubitv.com/movies/537392/gypsy

If you have never seen Gypsy, you might prefer the 1993 TV version with Bette Midler here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjZHYktCYbk&ab_channel=musicalsplays

If you are so inclined, and haven’t seen it for a while, you can also watch the movie version of Funny Girl, available to rent on many streaming services.
