Gypsy and Funny Girl
In an attempt to chip away at what makes Sondheim’s work great, we’ll contrast songs from two musicals from the final years of the Golden Age of Broadway: Gypsy (1959) for which Sondheim contributed the lyrics, and Funny Girl (1964) for which he did not.
