An introduction to Strauss’s “Ariadne auf Naxos” with Iain Scott

This extraordinary and multi-dimensional opera combines and contrasts the low-brow appeal of popular comedy as expressed in the Commedia dell’arte with the high seriousness of a penetrating interpretation of Greek myth. The work is in two parts. Its “Prologue” highlights the chaotic backstage preparations for an imminent theatrical performance, while its “Opera” contrasts two extreme and diametrically opposed approaches to male-female relationships.

Iain will explore interpretations of the myth and the Opera’s tongue in cheek send up of the conventions of the Operatic art form.

The COC’s production of “Ariadne auf Naxos” will open on Thursday, February 4, with 7 performances, ending February 20, 2027.
