“Worth, Inventing Haute Couture,” at the Petit Palais in Paris
Charles Frederick Worth (1825–1895), an Englishman, revolutionized fashion and founded the House of Worth, which defined Parisian luxury for over a century. This exhibition traces the house’s remarkable journey from the Second Empire to the Roaring ’20s, showcasing dresses, fabrics, and embellishments that reveal the inner workings of the couture house founded in 1858 as Worth & Bobergh, renamed Worth in 1870. At its height, the eight-story salon at 7 Rue de la Paix employed 1,200 people and pioneered modern luxury staples such as the star designer, branded labels, seasonal collections, and fashion shows.
