Limits of Political Freedom – is especially current!
We will delve into Socrates’ trial (as described in Plato’s Apology) and the light it casts on our political freedom, notably our freedom of speech. When the Athenian courts condemned Socrates to death on the charges of introducing new gods and corrupting the youth, were they acting with undue violence?
Was the philosopher martyred for freely sharing his thoughts or did he push the public’s forbearance too hard and threaten the system’s survival?
This ancient trial resonates with meaning to this day when we try to discover that point of balance between free speech and sound public order.
