The tribulations of Alfred Dreyfus took all of Europe by storm.
We often think (with some reason) that his treatment at the hand of the authorities was a clear instance of an ancient evil (i.e. that Dreyfus was the Shylock of France) or a harbinger of the Holocaust, but ‘L’affaire Dreyfus’ was a much more complicated matter.
In the eyes of French society, Dreyfus was a symbol of the modern, and his guilt/innocence would determine whether France would cling to its traditions or not. Dreyfus wasn’t a Jew so much but (as a Jew) the symbol of the shape of things to come.
