We look at how in Dutch Art artists conveyed their meanings. Symbolism, mainly in the form of popular emblems, proverbs and messages, (often encoded in the imagery shown on the walls of rooms within paintings), played an important role in storytelling.
We examine body language, gesture, and facial expression, and how these communicated, often comically, specific meanings in an otherwise ambiguous scene.
