Ruby Newman on James by Percival Everett
A brilliant, action-packed reimagining of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, told from the enslaved Jim’s point of view. When Jim overhears he’s to be sold and separated from his family, he hides on Jackson Island, where Huck Finn, escaping his violent father, joins him. Together, they embark on a perilous journey down the Mississippi River toward the uncertain promise of freedom. This retelling highlights Jim’s agency, intelligence, and compassion while retaining key elements of the original story, such as floods, storms, and encounters with the Duke and Dauphin.
