On 12 August 1914, France felt compelled to declare war on Austria-Hungary, Germany’s ally in Central Europe, in response to Austria’s military intervention against Serbia. Secret negotiations aimed at driving the last Habsburg emperor, Charles I, to sue for a separate peace in 1917, led French premier, George Clémenceau, to call for the destruction of the Austro-Hungarian empire, the following year.
