Rubens, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Van Dyck
Rubens rose head and shoulders above his contemporaries and could afford to be generous to the other artists in his circle. He pursued an amicable collaboration with Jan Brueghel but Van Dyck, described by Rubens as “my best pupil”, was driven throughout his career to escape from under the shadow of his master.
