on The Last Days of Budapest: The Destruction of Europe’s Most Cosmopolitan Capital in World War II
In autumn 1943, Budapest, a sanctuary for Allied POWs and refugees, teemed with intrigue as Hungary remained allied with Nazi Germany. This fragile haven crumbled in March 1944 when the Nazis invaded. By summer, Allied bombers struck the city, and by December, it was under siege by the Red Army. Amid savage fighting, death squads targeted Jews, and Russian artillery reduced Budapest to rubble. Drawing on diaries, documents, and survivor interviews, Adam LeBor vividly recounts the harrowing realities of wartime Budapest.
