Helen Fry in Conversation with Clare Mulley

on her book Agent Zo

Elzbieta Zawacka, known as Agent Zo, was the only woman to reach London as an emissary of the Polish Home Army during WWII. She joined the Polish elite Special Forces, the “Silent Unseen,” trained in Britain, and was the sole female member parachuted back into Nazi-occupied Poland. Hunted by the Gestapo, she played a key role in the Warsaw Uprising and Poland’s liberation. Post-war, despite her high decorations, she was imprisoned and tortured by the Soviet-backed regime, which suppressed her story for over forty years.

Clare Mulley’s new research and interviews bring Agent Zo’s forgotten heroism to light, reshaping the history of female resistance fighters in WWII.
