Sorrow of Young Werther by Massenet
Goethe’s semi-autobiographical epistolatory novel “the Sorrows of Young Werther” created a Europe-wide sensation in 1774. It tells the story of a young man who is driven to commit suicide after falling in love with an unattainably married woman. Hundreds of despairing young men were tragically inspired to follow his example.
When Jules Massenet adapted this work in 1892 it became one of the most-performed operas of the Paris Opera Comique Theatre and has remained one of the top five most popular French operas to this day.
Iain will help you to know what to watch for and listen for.
The COC will present seven performances from May 7th to 23rd.
In the series:
Apr. 20: Bluebeard’s Castle by Bartok
