Chagall and the Ecole de Paris
Between 1900 and 1940 Paris attracted artists from all over the world from Japan and Mexico to Russia and Poland. Most settled in Montparnasse on the Left Bank of the Seine and were designated the “Ecole de Paris”.
In fact very few of the artists of the Ecole de Paris were French born let alone Parisian. A remarkably high proportion were Jewish. For some, such as Chagall, Soutine, Modigliani, Kisling and Pascin Paris proved an eventual launching pad to world fame. This lecture will look at their lives and work but also at some of those artists who suffered a darker fate as they were not sufficiently famous and privileged to escape from Nazi terror.
