The Ribbon Leaf tells the story of a forbidden friendship!
Two girls, one German and one Jewish, who grew up as best friends in southern Germany – until Kristallnacht. After this, their friendship is “verboten”.
The book follows the two girls into young adulthood, from 1938 to 1945. Sabine who remains in Germany, while Edie escapes to Montreal with her mother, aunt, and uncle. Her beloved Papa, however, is left behind. Integrating into a new land is not easy, especially as Edie must come to terms with her sexuality, and deal with the increasing worry over her Papa.
Sabine left alone in Germany with a despondent mother must cope while her Nazi father and brother are off fighting.
Can their friendship, symbolized by the yellow ribbon, survive the war?
