Paintings are silent but they want to tell us things – sometimes they tell simple stories, but sometimes they send subtle messages; messages which intend to elevate, educate, warn, or criticise.
In this talk Lydia will focus on the two periods distinguished by their love of storytelling and moralising for the middle classes: Dutch 17th century genre paintings and vanitas, still lifes, and English moral narratives of the 18th and 19th centuries.
