Salvador Dali, The Metamorphosis of Narcissus, 1937, (Tate, London)
Joan Miro, Seated Woman, 1938, (Guggenheim, Venice)
Created during the rise of French Surrealism, these two paintings were intended to challenge bourgeois taste and disrupt cultural norms. While Miró used abstract, automatic techniques to craft a monstrous form, Dalí employed classical illusionism to depict a myth.
Elizabeth Perrotte will examine how each artist expressed Surrealist ideas and how these works influenced global audiences through exhibitions and publications.
