John Singer Sargent was influenced by Whistler, as was every western artist working at the time, both aesthetically and in the quest for independence. A master of languages and a charmer to boot, Sargent’s temperament helped him more easily make his mark. When scandal did erupt, nearly ending his career, a re-energized artist emerged to become the artist of the Gilded Age.
