Germont pere – The embodiment of conventional bourgeois morality in “La traviata”
The clash between GERMONT pere’s high-minded conventional morality, protecting entrenched bourgeois respectability, and the selfless, self-sacrificing generosity of the outcast courtesan VIOLETTA VALERY, provoked fierce controversy and debates in the 19th century. Verdi’s mastery of the “conflict” duet is never better illustrated than in his confrontation between these two symbolic, but intensely human, characters in the second act of “La traviata”.
