Nebuchadnezzar – (Nabucco) – the all-powerful king with two problem daughters.
Verdi’s first success is a tense family drama set against a pseudo-historical background. This 1841 opera focuses on King Nabucco’s tempestuous relationship with his two sharply-contrasted daughters, a treasonous regency during his brief period of madness, and his conversion to the religion of the Hebrews when he recovered. The title role requires a singing actor who can portray not only imperious dominance and fiery anger, but also heart-breaking humility and private tenderness.
