Rigoletto – The despicable court pimp who is redeemed by the love of his daughter
Fame and success beyond the borders of Italy first came for Verdi with his “Rigoletto” in 1851. The title character of this opera must be repulsive – physically deformed, inwardly warped and poisonously malevolent. And yet, Verdi gradually brings us to feel compassion and understanding for this brilliantly complex character. This role illuminates perhaps the greatest in the long line of Verdi’s obsessions with father-daughter relationships.
