Raphael was the youngest of the High Renaissance triumvirate of Leonardo. Michelangelo and Raphael. From his lifetime until the mid-19th century his art was regarded as the pinnacle of achievement in the Western tradition.

After the 19th Century critic John Ruskin expressed doubts and criticisms, Raphael fell from favour in critical and popular opinion and has never quite regained his former prominence.
