Rembrandt van Rijn uniquely embraced the marks of time in his work, particularly in his self-portraits, which form a lifelong study of aging, suffering, and the human condition. His artistic style evolved significantly from the smooth, detailed work of his youth to the rougher, more introspective, and expressive application of paint in his later years.
His paintings of old faces neither flatter nor scrutinise, are neither in denial about nor repelled by age, but instead relish the effects of time. Rembrandt is an artist to grow old with.
