Rena Tobey on Ben Shahn, Nonconformity at the Jewish Museum

The Jewish Museum presents the first U.S. retrospective in nearly half a century dedicated to social realist artist and activist Ben Shahn (1898-1969).

Ben Shahn: On Nonconformity explores the artist’s commitment to addressing key social issues—from the Great Depression to the Vietnam War—while also delving into his spiritual and Jewish influences. Featuring 175 works from the 1930s to 1960s, the exhibition showcases his evolution from documentary realism to a more poetic and allegorical style across various media. Centered on Shahn’s belief in “nonconformity” as essential to both art and societal change, the show highlights his advocacy for labor, civil rights, and freedom of expression, as well as his engagement with Jewish traditions of social justice.
