Sargent and Paris with Patrick Bade

Sargent and Paris traces John Singer Sargent’s early career (1874–mid-1880s), from his arrival in Paris as a precocious art student to the scandal and success of Madame X. In this formative decade, Sargent gained recognition with ambitious portraits, traveled widely for inspiration, and immersed himself in the cosmopolitan Paris art world. The exhibition brings together his diverse works from this period, culminating in an in-depth look at Madame X, shown with preparatory studies and portraits of Parisiennes by his contemporaries.
