Steve Nadler explores the Jewish world of seventeenth-century Amsterdam, a city where art, religion, and cultural exchange thrived side by side. We begin with Rembrandt and his neighbors in Amsterdam’s bustling Jewish quarter, including Rabbi Menasseh ben Israel—Europe’s most renowned Jewish thinker—with whom the artist collaborated. The we will consider more broadly how other Dutch artists engaged with Jewish themes, revealing how the Dutch viewed their own recent liberation from Catholic Spanish rule through the lens of biblical history, imagining Amsterdam itself as a kind of “New Jerusalem.”
