The Bloomsbury Group—or Bloomsbury Set—was a group of associated English writers, intellectuals, philosophers and artists in the first half of the 20th century.

The Bloomsbury Group’s origins in Cambridge

Trinity College and King’s College, Cambridge, were the home of the founder members of the Bloomsbury Group, although it was not called that at the time. A ‘secret’ society, called The Apostles (from its 12 members) met regularly for conversations and discussions, the Hearthrug in the meeting room being the forum where debates took place. Early members included Lytton Strachey, Leonard Woolf, Clive Bell, and Thoby Stephen. They and other friends, including John Maynard Keynes, E.M. Forster, Vanessa Stephen, Virginia Stephen (later Woolf), began to meet in London from 1905, at the ‘Friday Club’ and ‘Thursday Evenings’. In London the group was centred on the district of Bloomsbury, near the British Museum and the British Library, and formed a ‘Cambridge in London’.
