It could be argued that art changed more rapidly and profoundly in the first quarter of the twentieth than ever before or since. There was an explosion of “isms” leading up to and just after World War I and the three major movements of Expressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism determined the course of Western art for the rest of the twentieth century. Patrick Bade will be examining the genesis and the impact of these movements. We shall finish by looking at the work of Edvard Munch. Munch’s “The Scream” is one of the best known and most influential images in the history of Western art but his powerful work is hard to pigeon-hole in terms of art movements.
