Love, Lies & Opera: The Double Life of Lorenzo da Ponte

Da Ponte moved to Vienna, where he presented himself at court as candidate for the post of court poet to the Austrian imperial family. By a combination of talent and ‘chutzpah’ he secured this position and soon began working as a librettist for composers including Mozart, his greatest colleague. With Mozart he wrote three operas, Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Cosi Fan Tutte.

In this lecture we will look at the first of these, The Marriage of Figaro.

In the series:
Jan. 22: From Venetian Seminary to Scandal and Exile

Feb. 5: Mozart’s World: Da Ponte and the Birth of Modern Opera
Feb. 19: From Venice to Broadway: Lorenzo da Ponte Invents Himself (Again)
