“The Man Who Wrote Mozart’s Words: Lorenzo da Ponte’s Scandalous Life” with Simon Rees

From Venetian Seminary to Scandal and Exile
Da Ponte repeatedly reinvented himself. Born to a Jewish family and converted to Catholicism, he was educated for the priesthood but expelled from his Venetian parish for keeping a mistress and fathering a child. Fleeing Venice, he eventually reached Vienna and later recorded his colourful adventures—some shared with his contemporary, Casanova—in lively memoirs. His long, eventful life spanned the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, which he prudently avoided by living in England and America.
