The nude is not mere nakedness but an artistic transformation shaped by changing ideals. From Gothic fertility to Baroque abundance, Renaissance myth entrenched the female nude as a passive object of the male gaze. Nineteenth-century realism stripped away classical pretence, shocking audiences but opening the way for twentieth-century modernism, where the nude became one vehicle of individual expression.
Artists: Titian, Cranach, Rubens, Artemisia Gentilleschi, Manet and others. This break opened the door to 20th‑century artists, for whom the nude became just one of many vehicles for personal expression.
