Guernica and the violence of war

The Spanish Civil War is a complicated story. Join Olivier Courteaux as he makes it understandable.

On April 26th, 1937, the Basque town of Guernica was savagely bombed by the Italo-German air force, by order of General Franco’s General Staff. The destruction of the town, which took place on market day, killed 126 civilians.

Franco claimed Guernica was not bombed but set on fire by the Spanish Republicans. The unprecedented targeting of civilians made the news in Western democracies, announcing the scale of destruction that would take place during the Second World War. The story of Guernica remains to this day ingrained in our collective memory thanks to Picasso’s work of art.
