On the eve of World War II the Jewish community was the second largest in Europe, numbering almost 900,000 people, despite 100,000 having emigrated 1881-1914.
The History of the Jews of the Hungarian lands is an extraordinary one. Dating back nearly 2000 years, they lived under Roman, tribal, Christian, and Moslem rule.

For a long period, part of the Turkish Empire, then the Hapsburgs until finally becoming an independent state after World War I.

The Jews were prominent in every walk of life – politics, science, invention, music, theatre, film, banking, business and the professions. Making up 23% of the population of the Capital, it led to Budapest being referred to as Judapest.

This course will explore the triumphs and tragedy of this extraordinary community.
