Fin de Siecle Vienna 1890-WWI

Vienna was the capital of the 20th century. The intellectual life of the city, its architecture, sights and sounds, and new colors were for a new world waiting to be born. It was a time of charm, elegance, and intellectual progress all born in Viennese cafes.

Architecture and Design in Vienna: From Biedermeier to Secession.

This talk will trace the development of design in Vienna from the simplified classicism of Biedermeier, through the opulent historicism of the Ringstrasse, to the elegance of Viennese Art Nouveau.

In the series:
May 21: Concert life in Vienna: From Brahms to Schoenberg
May 28: Architecture and Design in Vienna: From Biedermeier to Secession
June 4: Viennese portraits – Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Richard Gerstl
July 9: Alma Mahler: Vienna’s Femme Fatale
