SUMMARY:Themes in Art with Lydia Bauman
DESCRIPTION:Dance\nIn European painting\, dance is rarely shown as mere leisure. Instead\, artists use it symbolically: as ritual and elemental force in circular dances and the medieval Dance of Death; as a vehicle for moral judgement\, whether condemning impropriety in Dutch genre and Orientalist art or enforcing social etiquette in Victorian painting. Even when depicted realistically in late 19th-century France\, dance serves less as subject than as a means to capture the wider modern scene. \nArtists: Breughel\, Poussin\, Degas\, Renoir\, Munch\, Matisse and others. \nIn the series:\nMar. 17: Music\n*Apr. 14: Dance *CHANGED TO MARCH 24

SUMMARY:Themes in Art with Lydia Bauman
DESCRIPTION:Music\nThough paintings are silent\, artists have long sought to make music visible. From medieval and Renaissance altarpieces showing heavenly orchestras as symbols of divine harmony\, to accurate depictions of secular polyphony in 15th-century Ferrara\, music signified order and culture. In 16th-century Venice it evoked a poetic Golden Age; in 17th-century Holland and Victorian Britain it reflected leisure while carrying moral lessons. Only in the late 19th century did artists begin to align painting with music itself: the Aesthetic movement privileged formal beauty over narrative\, and abstraction aimed to evoke sound through colour and line\, appealing even to synaesthetic experience. Thus music in art spans religion\, morality\, pleasure and pure sensory expression. \nArtists: Van Eyck\, Giorgione\, Vermeer\, Whistler\, Kandinsky and others. \nIn the series:\nMar. 17: Music\nApr. 14: Dance

SUMMARY:No More Venuses - The Nude in 20th Century with Lydia Bauman
DESCRIPTION:Ever since the rediscovery of Greek mythology in Italian Renaissance\, there has been a tendency to represent woman as Venus – as the goddess of love and beauty\, her main job was to recline and look seductive and beautiful. The canon had become so entrenched that centuries passed before artists began to cast a more objective eye on the woman’s body and role. With the advent of the 20th century\, women were no longer idealised but also became the subject of new art experimentations – from Picasso’s Demoiselles d’Avignon whose African sculpture inspiration led to the creation of Cubism to Alice Neel whose naked Self Portrait at the age of 80 subverted all accepted norms regarding what is a fit subject for art. Manet\, Courbet\, \nIn the series:\nJan. 20: The Nude in Art History\nFeb. 17: No More Venuses – the Nude in the 20th Century

SUMMARY:The Nude in Art History with Lydia Bauman
DESCRIPTION:The nude is not mere nakedness but an artistic transformation shaped by changing ideals. From Gothic fertility to Baroque abundance\, Renaissance myth entrenched the female nude as a passive object of the male gaze. Nineteenth-century realism stripped away classical pretence\, shocking audiences but opening the way for twentieth-century modernism\, where the nude became one vehicle of individual expression. \nArtists: Titian\, Cranach\, Rubens\, Artemisia Gentilleschi\, Manet and others. This break opened the door to 20th‑century artists\, for whom the nude became just one of many vehicles for personal expression. \nIn the series:\nJan. 20: The Nude in Art History\nFeb. 17: No More Venuses – the Nude in the 20th Century

SUMMARY:Themes with Lydia Bauman - Childhood in Art
DESCRIPTION:Childhood in Art\nFar from offering just a sentimental view of childhood\, artists across the ages tell us the fascinating stories of how children were perceived and treated in their day and of their place and value in the society of adults. \nWe learn of the lives of girls and boys segregated by society’s expectations\, we see them engaging in activities both familiar and unfamiliar to us today and we learn from them as they communicate wisdoms about the folly of grown ups. \nArtists will include Velasquez\, de Hooch\, Jan Steen\, Judith Leyster\, Murillo\, Edvard Munch \nIn the series:\nOct. 9: Jenny Saville\nOct. 23: Marriage in Art\nDec. 11: Childhood in Art **changed from Oct. 30**

SUMMARY:Radical Harmony with Lydia Bauman
DESCRIPTION:Radical Harmony at the National Gallery London\nNeo-Impressionists pioneered pointillism—using small dots of pure colour that blend at a distance to create light and form\, edging toward abstraction. Their bold style was paired with radical politics\, capturing both the beauty and struggles of late 19th-century Europe. Helene Kröller-Müller\, a pioneering art patron\, assembled the world’s most important collection of their work\, including pieces by Seurat\, Van Gogh\, Signac\, and Pissarro.

DESCRIPTION:Marriage in Art\nA wry look at the institution of marriage in art\, more often seen as a burden than a blessing! With artists playing the role variously of marriage broker\, marriage witness\, marriage counsellor or witty critic of the institution of marriage\, we learn what their paintings reveal about customs and the perceived roles of men and women within the marriage and in society from 15th century to modern times. \nArtists will include Jan Van Eyck\, Veronese\, Frans Hals\, Hogarth\, Chagall \nIn the series:\nOct. 9: Jenny Saville\nOct. 23: Marriage in Art\nDec. 11: Childhood in Art **changed from Oct. 30**

SUMMARY:Themes with Lydia Bauman - Jenny Saville
DESCRIPTION:Jenny Saville (exhibition at National Portrait Gallery London)\nJenny Saville rose to prominence in the early 1990s and has played a leading role in the reinvigoration of figurative painting – a genre that she continues to test. Her unique ability to create visceral portraits from thick layers of paint reveals an artist with a deep passion for the process itself. \nJenny Saville: The Anatomy of Painting Exhibition traces the development of her practice\, spotlighting key artworks\, and exploring her connection to art history as well as art that questions the historical notions of female beauty. \nIn the series:\nOct. 9: Jenny Saville\nOct. 23: Marriage in Art\nDec. 11: Childhood in Art **changed from Oct. 30**

SUMMARY:Lydia Bauman - Eye-Opening Art
DESCRIPTION:Popular Themes in Art – Hands\nHands are the only part of the body which are reliably seen uncovered and as such play a major role in storytelling. Hand gestures direct the eye to help read the narrative. They can be very expressive of the character’s emotions\, or betray his or her social status. Hands engage in a secret language of innuendo to pass covert messages to us the spectators. They are also instrumental in communicating one of the five senses – that of touch – in some of the most moving paintings we know. \nWe will look at artists such as Michelangelo\, Rembrandt\, Matisse or Kirchner. \nIn the series:\nJune 17: Siena: The Rise of Painting\, 1300 ‒1350\, National Gallery (London UK) Exhibition\nJune 26: Popular Themes in Art – Eyes\nJuly 3: Popular Themes in Art – Hands

SUMMARY:Lydia Bauman - Eye-Opening Art
DESCRIPTION:Popular Themes in Art – Eyes\nIt is said that eyes are a window into the soul\, and indeed it is in the eyes that the expression of any portrait resides. But they are more than that. Eyes have a rich history in European painting – from tales of blindness to the power of eye contact to engage\, provoke\, or seduce; the sideways glance\, or one emerging from shadows to instill a sense of unease; the reflected glance\, or the unseeing gaze\, all play a part in manipulating the way we read a painting. \nWe will look at artists as varied as Giotto\, Titian\, Rubens\, or Manet. \nIn the series:\nJune 17: Siena: The Rise of Painting\, 1300 ‒1350\, National Gallery (London UK) Exhibition\nJune 26: Popular Themes in Art – Eyes\nJuly 3: Popular Themes in Art – Hands

SUMMARY:The Last Caravaggio with Lydia Bauman
DESCRIPTION:This lecture based on the exhibition at London’s National Gallery will present an opportunity to explore Caravaggio and his late paintings. \nCaravaggio reduces the stories in his paintings to their essentials\, focusing on the human tragedy and conveying the scene’s emotional power through a more muted palette\, pronounced chiaroscuro and dramatically choregraphed gestures. \nCharacteristic of Caravaggio’s mature works\, the composition appears simple but hides a sophisticated physical and psychological interplay between the main protagonists. \n

SUMMARY:Lydia Bauman on "Sargent & Fashion" Exhibit at the Tate
DESCRIPTION:“Sargent used fashion as a powerful tool to express identity and personality. He regularly chose the outfits of his collaborators or manipulated their clothing. This innovative use of costume was central to his artwork – for example\, tugging a heavy coat tighter around a man to emphasise his figure or letting a dress strap sensuously slip from a woman’s shoulder. It was these daring sartorial choices that allowed him to express his vision as an artist.” Tate Britain \nIn the series:\nApr. 9: Whistler – with Rena Tobey\nApr. 16: Sargent – with Rena Tobey\nMay 6: Sargent & Fashion – with Lydia Bauman

SUMMARY:Dynamic Dutch Painting with Lydia Bauman
DESCRIPTION:Symbols and body language\nWe look at how in Dutch Art artists conveyed their meanings. Symbolism\, mainly in the form of popular emblems\, proverbs and messages\, (often encoded in the imagery shown on the walls of rooms within paintings)\, played an important role in storytelling. \nWe examine body language\, gesture\, and facial expression\, and how these communicated\, often comically\, specific meanings in an otherwise ambiguous scene. \nIn the series:\nJan. 9: Frans Hals\nJan. 16: Wine\, Women\, and Song\nApr. 2: Symbols and body language* \n*moved from March 19

SUMMARY:Dynamic Dutch Painting with Lydia Bauman
DESCRIPTION:Wine\, Women\, and Song\nMany Dutch paintings feature drinking. Much condemned in Calvinist Holland\, as the root of all evil (across all social spheres)\, it nevertheless inspired many paintings featuring gentlemen pressing ladies to drink\, with consequences spelled out in witty critiques of dissolute households and cuckolded husbands. \nIn the series:\nJan. 9: Frans Hals\nJan. 16: Wine\, Women\, and Song\nMar. 19: Symbols and body language

SUMMARY:Dynamic Dutch Painting with Lydia Bauman
DESCRIPTION:Frans Hals\nNational Gallery in London – The Credit Suisse Exhibition \nThis exhibition\, the first major retrospective of Hals in more than 30 years\, means a new generation can discover why he deserves his place as one of the greatest painters in Western art. \nHals was one of the most sought-after painters of his generation whose portraits enthralled 17th century audiences and earned him the status of Haarlem’s famous son. His deft brushwork was unparalleled and he built his reputation on a new style of portrait – highly unusual in his time – that showed relaxed\, lively sitters\, often smiling\, and even laughing. \nIn the series:\nJan. 9: Frans Hals\nJan. 16: Wine\, women\, and song\nMar. 19: Symbols and body language

SUMMARY:Female Artists "Out of the Shadows" with Lydia Bauman
DESCRIPTION:As part of Lydia’s “Armchair Exhibition Series”\, she will look at three female artists who are/or were recently exhibited in galleries. \nBerthe Morisot: A Unique Discovery \nA student of Corot and muse of Manet\, Berthe Morisot was the first woman Impressionist and one of the main members of the group alongside Monet\, Renoir\, Degas and Pissarro. Unlike her colleagues\, however\, she sold relatively few works\, which is why her art is relatively little represented in museums. \nHer taste for light colours and pastel and her skilled draughtsmanship and freedom of handling were much admired by her fellow artists. \nIn the series:\nThurs. Aug. 31: Gwen John\nTues. Sept. 19: Alice Neel\nTues. Oct. 10: Berthe Morisot

SUMMARY:Female Artists "Out of the Shadows" with Lydia Bauman
DESCRIPTION:As part of Lydia’s “Armchair Exhibition Series”\, she will look at three female artists who are/or were recently exhibited in galleries. \nAlice Neel: Hot Off The Griddle \nAlice Neel (1900-1984) had the ability to look around her with empathy and immortalise it on canvas. Steeped in humanity\, her works portray the most disadvantaged sectors of society: women\, immigrants and the jobless. Describing herself as ‘a collector of souls’\, Neel worked in New York during a period in which figurative painting was deeply unfashionable. Crowned the ‘court painter of the underground\,’ her canvases celebrate those who were too often marginalised in society. \nIn the series:\nThurs. Aug. 31: Gwen John\nTues. SUMMARY:Female Artists "Out of the Shadows" with Lydia Bauman
DESCRIPTION:As part of Lydia’s “Armchair Exhibition Series”\, she will look at three female artists who are/or were recently exhibited in galleries. \nGwen John: Art and Life in London and Paris \nUncover the life\, loves and influences of Gwen John\, a groundbreaking modern artist. Less well known than her husband Augustus John\, this is the story of a progressive trailblazer and of an artist\,  at the forefront of modern art in the early 20th century. \nGwen John’s work is both instantly recognisable and era-defining. She is known for the quiet strength of the solitary women in her portraits and the reflective stillness of her interiors. But for decades she was overshadowed by her famous brother Augustus and often portrayed as a recluse. This exhibition expels this myth and re-examines the significance of John’s work alongside her fellow international modernists. \nIn the series:\nThurs. Aug. 31: Gwen John\nTues. SUMMARY:The Pre-Raphaelites with Lydia Bauman
DESCRIPTION:The Pre-Raphaelites – Victorian Radicals\nThe Pre-Raphaelites were a small group of young artists trained at the Royal Academy who rebelled against its academic teachings and against the popular taste of the Victorians\, in favour of more serious art inspired by the art and literature of the Middle Ages. We will look at the art of the founders of the short lived Pre Raphaelites Brotherhood  –  John Everett Millais\, Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti.\nIn the series: \nMay 30: After Impressionism\nJuly 11: Victorian Taste in Art\nJuly 18: The Pre-Raphaelites

SUMMARY:Victorian Taste & Radicals with Lydia Bauman
DESCRIPTION:Victorian Taste in Art\nLydia Bauman explores ideas that preoccupied artists and critics of the period – the relationship between art and nature\, questions of class and gender identity\, the value of the handmade versus machine production\, and the search for beauty in an age of industry – issues that remain relevant and actively debated today. \nAn overview of Victorian taste in paintings (“truth to nature” – “appropriateness of sentiment” and “morally healthy subject matter“)  with Victorian painters such as LA Egg\, Frith\, Hicks\, Landseer and those Pre Raphaelites who adhered to this-  Millais and Holman Hunt.\nIn the series: \nMay 30: After Impressionism\nJuly 11: Victorian Taste in Art\nJuly 18: The Pre-Raphaelites

SUMMARY:Lydia Bauman on Lucian Freud
DESCRIPTION:British painter\, Lucian Freud\, was born in Berlin\, the son of Jewish architect Ernst L. Freud and the grandson of Sigmund Freud. Lucian Freud is one of the most well-known and influential painters of the 20th century. His expressionist style of portraiture is instantly recognizable\, and over time he became a kind of living legend as he continued to paint and stage groundbreaking exhibitions right up to the end of his long life. \nLucian’s works  are noted for their psychological and often discomforting examination of the relationship between artist and model.
