This lecture will introduce you to the various movements that have influenced contemporary architecture seen in several styles from concrete structures to asymmetrical facades and steel cantilevers.

Contemporary architecture uses advanced technology and materials and is highly conceptual, sculptural, innovative, and expressive. Computer-aided designs allowed three-dimensional visualization and allowed for curved forms and experimental designs; tube structure allowed lighter, taller, and more substantial buildings; and skyscrapers with sustainability and functionality.

Architects like Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Norman Foster, Santiago Calatrava, Daniel Libeskind, Rem Koolhaas, Herzog & de Meuron and Steven Holl will be examined.

In the series:
Apr. 3: “Ornament is Crime” Early Modern Architecture with Michael Guido
Apr. 17: “Sleek and Chic” Mid-century Modern Architecture with Michael Guido
May 1: “Factors involved in a complicated process” Contemporary Architecture with Michael Guido
