Voices of Conscience: James Baldwin & Graham Greene
James Baldwin, one of the 20th century’s great literary voices, transcended race and class to explore the human condition with stunning, evocative prose. His works, including Go Tell It on the Mountain (a Time magazine top 100 English-language book), The Fire Next Time, and Notes of a Native Son, reflect his tough upbringing, civil rights activism, and humanistic vision. Baldwin poignantly wrote, “People cling to their hates… because once hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain.”
Graham Greene, famed as “the ultimate chronicler of 20th-century moral ambiguity,” infused his writing with insights from his time in MI6, exploring themes of power and conscience. An acclaimed novelist and screenwriter, he earned numerous accolades, including the Shakespeare Prize and Jerusalem Prize. Greene’s works, such as The Power and the Glory, The Quiet American, Our Man in Havana, and Travels with My Aunt, showcase his brilliance, as does his screenplay for The Third Man, one of cinema’s greatest films.
