Hokusai, the Japanese Rembrandt with Simon Rees

The Western discovery of Katsushika Hokusai in the mid-19th century aligned with a period of artistic rebellion against traditional fine art. Hokusai, primarily known for his woodcuts, was praised by French critic Louis Gonse as a Japanese equivalent of Rembrandt and Goya. Throughout his career, Hokusai’s technique evolved, with his landscapes, especially The Great Wave off Kanagawa, becoming iconic. He was also celebrated in the West for his vivid depictions of people, animals, and nature. His works, including the Manga series and The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife, were highly influential.
